Easy Canvas Prints interviews John & Sherry Young from the popular home decor blog Young House Love on how to decorate & transform a room!
We all love decorating, but sometimes it is hard to know where to start, what to do, and how to do it. From initial ideas to final finishing touches, we’ve interviewed John and Sherry Young from Young House Love to help you get headed in the right direction. Read some of their ideas and experiences with decorating rooms of their own and take away some inspiration for how you could apply their advice to your own decorating. With summer coming along and more daylight to spare, now is the perfect time to pick up that paint brush and start decorating that room you’ve been wanting to transform.
Easy Canvas Prints: What are the key things you look for first when deciding what needs improvement in a room? Is it the color of the walls, the lighting, the details, etc.?
Young House Love: Oh man, we?re so used to starting with rooms where almost everything needs improvement that it?s usually a no brainer! But in all seriousness, it?s usually pretty easy to pick out what you hate about a room – be it the wall color, the flooring, the window treatments, or the accessories. What?s harder is identifying some of those more fundamental issues like furniture layout, scale, and lighting that could keep a room from ?clicking.? So we always do our best to ask ourselves the bigger questions like ?Is there another furniture arrangement that would be more functional for us?? before jumping ahead to details like what color to put on the walls. And we try not to rush into any purchases, since we like to wait to find pieces (and paint colors) that we truly both love instead of rushing into something we might regret.
Easy Canvas Prints: What or who do you turn to for most of your design inspiration?
We like to get inspiration from a mix of sources. Shelter magazines like House Beautiful and Better Home & Gardens are always overflowing with ideas and beautiful images. But we also like to balance that with other design and DIY blogs, since not only do you get great ideas but you can also find the confidence (and instructions!) to pull it off yourself.
Easy Canvas Prints: Would you say transforming a room is easier or harder than most people think?
It?s easy to get overwhelmed by the thought of making over a room – especially major makeovers like kitchens and bathrooms. It?s enough to make anyone want to throw their hands up (even us sometimes). But we always find that breaking up any project into smaller tasks can make the whole thing seem much more achievable. For instance, rather than adding ?re-do master bedroom? to your to-do list, put goals like ?find new bedding? and ?bring home paint swatches for the walls.” It?s much easier to check things off that way without getting too overwhelmed.
Easy Canvas Prints: Tell us one thing you?ve done in your own decorating to immediately transform the feel of a room?
Our first answer is paint. It?s probably not a unique answer, but that’s because it?s so true: just getting some color on your walls immediately makes a room feel transformed. But since not everyone can paint (sorry renters!) our second answer is always window treatments. Breezy floor length curtains hung high and wide over a window are a great way to add some color, height, and softness to your space, while making the room look more polished at the same time.
Easy Canvas Prints: What would be your first suggestions to someone just coming into the DIY world?
Feel free to take it slowly. You don?t need to make your first DIY project a whole bathroom gut job or anything crazy. It may just end up frustrating you, going poorly, and turning you off to the whole idea of DIY. So begin with something more manageable first (one of our first DIY projects in our first house was painting trim and replacing a toilet). That way you’ll hopefully gain the confidence (and some of the tools!) to work your way up to bigger things down the road.
Easy Canvas Prints: Give us some canvas tips! What are two great ways to use canvas prints to transform a room?
We?ve seen great inspiration rooms with giant canvas prints over a couch or buffet that provide great drama to a room, while also helping to anchor those large pieces of furniture. And smaller canvases can be a great solution to filling a sliver of empty wall space, especially in areas like hallways where you may not want to worry about bumping into a glass frame.
