Kiss Me – St. Pattys Day DIY Craft – By Julie of White Lights On Wednesday

March is one of my favorite months. It’s not too hot yet, as Arizona goes. Spring training is in full swing, and I have the best excuse ever to drink Guinness like a fish – St. Patrick’s Day! We’re really into the wearing of the green, pub hoping all day with the kids to listen to local Irish bands and singers, and meeting up with all our friends through out the day. It’s a wonderful day we always take time out for every year.

I’m naturally a little camera happy, and we always have lots of pictures from our St. Patrick’s Day exploits. To my total dismay I realized I didn’t have a green picture frame anywhere. I’m trying to get more pictures up around our new rental to make it feel more like home. Off to the store the littles and I went, and now I’ve got a great picture frame that only cost me $6! Want to make one too? It’s really, really easy. Let’s go!

Stuff You’ll Need:

1 roll green washi tape you like {I’m using Scotch Washi/Masking Tape}

Scrapbooking letters {I grabbed black letters for some major contrast}

A pair of scissors

A plain wooden picture frame {I got this one for $1 at Michael’s}

How to Make It:

Take your picture frame out of the wrapping. Remove the photo insert, and any things else it comes with (like glass).

Lay a strip of washi tape across the top edge of the frame, being sure to leave enough tape hanging over the top edge to fold over. Lay your second strip of tape. If you chose a patterned tape, now would be the time to start lining the pattern up or figuring out what pattern you want your stripes/polka dots in.

Continue adding tape layers until you reach the top of the picture cutout in the frame. Make sure there is some tape hanging over the edge of the cutout. Make diagonal cuts in the tape at the inside corners of the cut out (pictured below), and at the top edge corners. Fold the excess tape over the edges and around the corners; trim excess tape as needed to keep a smooth and polished looking finish.

Continue laying tape strips across the frame. Don’t just cover the right side and then the left side of the frame’s picture cutout. This will help make sure the pattern is lined up perfectly. Not to mention you have plenty of tape to wrap the picture cutout edges. As you wrap the tape around the cutout edge, be sure to press the tape into the indented areas so it’s snug to the wood.

Cut around the little pieces that secure the picture in place, and make things work as best you can. No one’s going to see the back any way. This is what mine looks like. If you want a 100% finished frame, just fill in the empty space with small pieces of tape. You can line up the pattern or just cover the bare spots.

When you’re done you’ll having a little something that looks like this.

Now for $4, I’d say this is a pretty good looking frame. In fact I’d be more likely to grab this over some of the ones I’ve seen at Target (which is actually where I picked this tape up). While it’s super cute and all, I wanted to go full on St Patrick’s Day with the frame. I grabbed some scrapbooking letters – black for high contrast to the neon green – and sweetened things up a little.

You can put whatever St. Patrick’s Day phrase you like. Luck. Slainte. Erin Go Bragh. Since I was putting a picture of me and my fiance in the frame I went with “Kiss Me” and I think it’s totally perfect.

This is a really, really easy project that you could adapt to any occasion with a different tape and phrase. Any they’re so inexpensive you could make a pile of them as gifts for the cost of one roll of tape and some extra picture frames. Happy crafting!
